This standard reference material (SRM) is atmospheric particulate matter collected in urban areas, primarily used as a quality control material and for evaluating inorganic analysis methods and determining selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro PAHs) in atmospheric particulate matter and similar matrices, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) analogues, and chlorinated pesticides.

NIST supports accurate and compatible measurements by certifying over 1300 standard reference materials and providing their distinctive composition or characteristics, or a combination of both. These materials are used as part of the overall quality assurance plan for instrument calibration on a unit by unit basis to verify the accuracy of specific measurements and support the development of new measurement methods.
