Overview

The German company HYDRO-BBIOS spent three years designing a new intelligent water sampler - AFIS. This water sampler can quickly and evenly inject a certain amount of fixative into the sampling bottle while sampling, which can instantly fix the mRNA of microorganisms in the sample. These fixed mRNAs can be reverse transcribed into DNA in the laboratory, which can then be amplified by PCR to study the selective expression of microorganisms in specific environments. AFIS inventor Dr. Guenter Jost:

Dr. Jost obtained his doctoral degree from Rostock University in 1983 and has served as a German scientist for the Sino German cooperation project "Marine Microbial Ecological Function" (1996-2000), a visiting professor at Cato-lice del Norte Coquimbo University in Chile (1995), Xiamen University Environmental Science Center (1998), and School of Life Sciences (2002). Currently undertaking research on "The Role of Bacteria in the Marine Microfood Web", "Bacterial Activity in Mn and N Circulation at the Aerobic and Anaerobic Interfaces of Water", "Marine Inorganic Nitrifying Bacteria", "Interactions between Water Bacteria and Bacteriophages" in TRUMP, JGOFS, GOBEST, DFG projects. Currently serving as a German scientist in the Sino German cooperation project "Research on the Coexistence System of Indigenous Bacteriophages and Their Host Bacteria in Different Water Environments". Published multiple papers in journals such as ISME, Environment Microbiol, and Appl Environment Microbiol.

Equipment Introduction:

Microorganisms are catalysts that drive almost all biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, understanding the abundance, diversity, and activities of microorganisms in the surrounding environment is not only a fundamental field of research for microbiologists, but also very important for understanding the Earth's basic cycles. The culture free method is used to infer the metabolic function of prokaryotic cells for analyzing the transcriptome.
The major challenge in the metabolism of marine microorganisms is the poor stability of mRNA, which is easily degraded in natural environments. Therefore, it is impossible to objectively study the expression of microbial DNA in specific environments (such as water depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, etc.) in laboratory environments.

Fixed injection effect

Replace the cap with a spherical valve to seal the sampling bucket and prevent the pressure difference caused by the sealing moment from affecting the activity of bacteria and microorganisms inside the bucket.

Built in reagent bag for easy replacement,

Can be replaced according to different needs

Application areas:

  • AFIS, with its mRNA underwater in situ fixation technology, can serve as a supporting device for bacterial research, biological genetic information transmission, and expression matching. It is a groundbreaking technological breakthrough in marine bacterial and microbial research.
  • AFIS can be used independently to collect water samples on-site and fix the mRNA of bacteria, microorganisms, etc. in them.
  • It can be fixed on other large equipment, such as CTD water collectors, ROVs, Landers, etc., to collect water samples simultaneously during other investigation projects.

AFIS is installed on the CTD water sampler

AFIS is mounted on ROV

AFIS is equipped on other devices such as Lander

Perfect compatibility with CTD water sampler:

An important application of AFIS is in conjunction with CTD water collectors. AFIS is perfectly compatible with CTD water collectors widely used by domestic users. In terms of sampling trigger mechanism, hardware installation, etc., CTD water collectors from German company HYDRO-BIOS and American company Sea Bird have successfully achieved perfect compatibility with AFIS and passed testing.

When used in conjunction with the CTD water sampler from the German company HYDRO-BBIOS, simply remove the original card cover water sampler and replace it with AFIS. When used in conjunction with the CTD water sampler from Sea Bird in the United States, the original 2 cap type water sampler bottle positions can be replaced with 1 AFIS.

Not only did it improve the utilization rate of the CTD water collector host, but it also saved valuable research funds.
