A fully automatic headspace gas chromatograph is often interpreted as an instrument that combines a headspace sampler with a gas chromatograph. It is a chromatographic technique that adds a headspace injection device (divided into manual and automatic) in front of the gas chromatograph injection port. It has minimal harm to analysts and the environment, is easy to operate, has good reproducibility, and accurate injection volume. It is an analytical method that meets the requirements of "green analytical chemistry" and has the following advantages over ordinary chromatographic analysis:
1. Wide applicability
Headspace gas chromatography can analyze both volatile components in liquid samples and volatile substances in solid samples; It can analyze single component volatile gas samples or separate and analyze complex volatile component mixtures; It can be used for both constant headspace gas sample analysis and detection of low levels of volatile components.
2. Fast and accurate injection
Directly take volatile gaseous samples of liquid samples (or solid samples) and send them to the gas chromatograph for separation and analysis. In many cases, sample pretreatment operations can be eliminated and there are fewer human interference factors, making this method faster and simpler than ordinary chromatographic analysis. In addition, due to the use of quantitative tube injection, the analysis is more accurate.
3. High sensitivity and good reproducibility
Sometimes lower detection limits can be obtained than ordinary gas chromatography analysis, because it avoids solvent interference caused by conventional sample pretreatment processes and certain peculiarities of headspace samples. For liquid or solid samples that are easy to decompose and cannot be directly analyzed by injection, they have more practical value.
