NIKON INSTECH, a subsidiary of Nikon (headquartered in Tokyo), will launch the "BW-M7000" optical interference microscope system with a high resolution of up to 1pm (Figure 1). This system can measure surface properties (such as material surface patterns and roughness, small surface drops, etc.) with high speed and precision, ranging from sub nanometer to millimeter level heights.
The surface properties were determined using Nikon's self-developed method, the FVWLI (Focus Variation with White Light Interference) method. This method can generate interference patterns on the surface of the object material, accurately determining the focal position of each pixel. By using this method, surface characterization with a three-dimensional arithmetic mean height (Sa) of 0.1 nm can be achieved at all magnifications ranging from 2.5 times (field of view 4.4 × 4.4 mm) to 100 times (field of view 111.0 × 110.0 μ m). It can measure ultra smooth surface to rough surface in a single mode, without replacing optical filters and other components. In addition, spectral interferometry is used to measure the film thickness. It can measure the thickness of transparent films ranging from 1nm to 40 μ m in less than 0.1 seconds.
Fully automatic measurement can be achieved through program control, which can automatically perform operations such as focusing, adjusting the tilt of the sample, and determining whether it is qualified. It can automatically measure multiple fields of view, and can be easily used for quality management and on-site operations in addition to material research and development.
