Measures to eliminate or reduce the impact of noise on ultrasonic flow meters
Date: 2022-03-21Read: 26

Under fixed installation conditions, ultrasonic flow meters can improve their signal processing and diagnostic capabilities, effectively reducing noise. Under normal circumstances, the measurement accuracy of a flow meter is crucial. In situations where accuracy cannot be guaranteed, using a flow meter to measure the flow rate of a regulating valve that generates noise will inevitably produce incorrect results. Therefore, improving the recognition and detection of sound pulses by flow meters, while enhancing the filtering ability of signals, can improve the accuracy of measurements.

To reduce noise interference, it is advisable to install the flowmeter upstream of the regulating valve. The advantage is that the pressure is high, the signal is strong, and the noise will not be amplified. Extending the straight pipe sections upstream and downstream of the flowmeter, as well as installing isolation devices between the flowmeter and the noise source, will reduce noise. But the length of the straight pipe section may require multiple pipe diameters to reduce noise interference, so installing isolation equipment is more convenient and effective. Experiments have shown that filters, heat exchangers, and turbine equipment are all effective devices for reducing noise. Ultrasonic flowmeter elbows and blind tees can also reduce noise by installing blind tees. The noise is reflected back after the fluid passes through the blind tees. The method of using two valves to share the pressure drop can also reduce the generation of noise, but usually this method is more expensive.

Ultrasonic noise reducer for noise reduction. Noise eliminator is to use a single composite small reflective device with the same wavelength as the flowmeter, foam or some devices with viscosity, elasticity and absorption to eliminate noise. Tests have shown that this method can reduce noise by 30%. The noise reducer can be directly installed downstream of the flowmeter, with flange connection, without affecting the accuracy of the flowmeter. Ultrasonic noise suppressors often experience blockages and a certain pressure drop, thus losing some advantages. However, in some cases, such as when compared to the noise generated by a large pressure drop in the regulating valve, the pressure drop of the noise reducer can be ignored. Ultrasonic flow meters can be used with noise suppressors to reduce noise in confined spaces such as offshore platforms.
