Overview
The shape and surface roughness of rolling components are crucial for the operational performance and noise characteristics of any contact roller bearing. Taylor Hobson has many Form Talysurf inductance series instruments suitable for measuring the shape and surface roughness characteristics of rolling components. In addition, the roundness and waviness of the rolling components are also very important. Usually, we use roundness measuring instruments to measure these characteristics.

Contact rolling bearing components come in various shapes, including spherical, cylindrical, and conical (tapered rollers). The operational performance and noise generation of bearings largely depend on the precision of rolling components. Compared with the surface roughness of the raceway, the surface roughness characteristics of rolling components usually have a greater impact on the noise generated by bearings.

Taylor Hobson also developed a special fixing device called the 'ball measuring unit', which can be used in conjunction with any Form Talysurf inductance series instrument to measure the surface roughness of cylindrical and spherical rolling components. This unit performs measurement work by rotating the rolling component above a fixed inverse inductive sensor using a friction pad. The sensor range used is very small, so the inductive sensor can be set to high resolution, so this unit can be used to measure extremely small surface roughness (roughness below 6 nanometers can be measured).
