2. Main characteristics of ceramic sealing materials

(1) High stiffness

The stiffness is measured by the elastic modulus, which reflects the strength of the bonding bond. Therefore, ceramics with strong chemical bonds have a high elastic modulus, which is several times higher than metals and 2-4 orders of magnitude higher than polymer materials. The elastic moduli of several typical ceramics are shown in Table 1.

The elastic modulus is not sensitive to tissue, including grain size and crystal morphology, but is greatly affected by porosity. Pores will reduce the elastic modulus of the material.

(2) High hardness

1The greater the compression of the tension spring, the better the sealing effect. In fact, if the tension of the spring is too large, it can cause rapid wear of the friction pair and burn out in an instant; Excessive tightening causes the tension spring to lose its ability to regulate the end face of the dynamic ring, resulting in seal failure.

2The tighter the sealing diagram of the moving ring, the better. Actually, tightening the dynamic ring seal is harmful and not beneficial. One is to increase the wear and leakage of the sealing ring and shaft sleeve; Secondly, it increases the resistance to axial adjustment and movement of the moving ring, making it difficult to make timely adjustments when working conditions change frequently; Thirdly, excessive fatigue of the tension spring can easily damage it; The fourth is to deform the sealing ring of the moving ring, which affects the sealing effect.

3The tighter the static ring seal, the better. The static ring seal is completely in a stopped state, and a relatively tight seal will have better sealing effect, but being too tight is also harmful. One is that it causes excessive deformation of the static ring seal, which affects the sealing effect; The second reason is that the static ring material is mostly graphite, which is generally brittle and can easily break under excessive stress; Thirdly, the installation and disassembly are difficult, and it is easy to damage the static ring.

4The tighter the impeller lock nut, the better. Leakage between the shaft sleeve and the shaft (inter shaft leakage) is quite common in mechanical seal sealing. It is generally believed that inter shaft leakage is caused by the impeller lock nut not being tightened. However, there are many factors that can lead to inter shaft leakage, such as the failure and displacement of the inter shaft gasket, impurities in the inter shaft, significant positional errors at the joint between the shaft and the shaft sleeve, damage to the touch surface, gaps between various components on the shaft, and excessively long screw threads on the shaft head, all of which can cause inter shaft leakage. Excessive locking of the locking nut will only cause premature failure of the shaft pad. On the contrary, moderately locking the locking nut will maintain a certain degree of tightness and elasticity of the shaft pad. During operation, the locking nut will actively lock, keeping the shaft pad in a protruding sealing state.

5The new is better than the old. Relatively speaking, using new mechanical seals for sealing is better than using old ones, but the quality or material selection of new mechanical seals for sealing is not timely, and errors in cooperation scale can greatly affect the sealing effect; In polymeric and permeable media, it is still better not to replace the static ring if there is no excessive wear. Because the stationary ring is in a stopped state for a long time in the stationary ring seat, the polymer and impurities are deposited together, which has a good sealing effect.
