The difference between parallel and conical twin-screw extruders

Many people may struggle with whether a parallel screw or a conical screw is better! Or, to distinguish between them, let me introduce these two extruders to you next!
The difference between parallel and conical twin-screw extruders:
1. Concentric distance: The center distance of the flat twin-screw is the same, while the two axes of the conical twin-screw form an angle, and the size of the center distance varies along the axis.
2. Diameter: The diameter of parallel twin-screw is the same, while the small end diameter of conical twin-screw is different from the large end diameter.
3. Length to diameter ratio: Parallel twin-screw (L/D) refers to the ratio of the effective length of the screw to the outer circumference of the screw, while conical twin-screw (L/D) refers to the ratio of the effective length of the screw to the average of the large and small end diameters.
Double screw extruder
Due to the limitation of the small distance between the centers of the two screws, the space provided for the radial bearings and thrust bearings supporting the two output shafts, as well as the related transmission gears, in the transmission gearbox is very limited. Despite the designer's efforts, it is impossible to solve the problems of bearing capacity, small module and diameter of the gears, and small tail diameter of the two screws, resulting in poor torque resistance. The small output torque and poor load resistance are significant defects of parallel twin-screw extruders. However, the plasticity of the aspect ratio is the advantage of parallel twin-screw. It can increase or decrease the aspect ratio according to the differences in molding conditions to meet the requirements of plastic processing technology, and can expand the application range of parallel twin-screw. However, this is difficult to achieve with conical twin-screw extruders.
Conical twin-screw extruder
Two conical screws are arranged horizontally, and the two axes are inserted into the barrel at an angle. The center distance between the two axes gradually increases from the small end to the large end, resulting in a larger center distance between the two output shafts of the transmission gearbox. The gears and gear shafts in these transmission systems, as well as the radial bearings and thrust bearings supporting these gear shafts, leave a large installation space. It can accommodate larger specifications of radial bearings and thrust bearings, and each transmission shaft has a shaft diameter sufficient to transmit torque.
