Carbon and sulfur are important elements for determining the specifications and quality testing of steel products. A carbon sulfur analyzer is a method of separating carbon and sulfur elements from metal elements and their compounds by burning a sample in an electric arc furnace with oxygen, generating and releasing CO2 and SO2 gases. The content of CO2 and SO2 is then measured, and the carbon and sulfur content in the sample is calculated.

Carbon sulfur analyzer plays an important role in the performance of steel: as the carbon content increases, the hardness and strength of steel increase, while its toughness and plasticity decrease. Conversely, as the carbon content decreases, the hardness and strength decrease, while toughness and plasticity increase. Sulfur exists in steel, which deteriorates its quality, reduces its mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and weldability.
Iron with a carbon content above 1.70% is called cast iron, and steel with a carbon content below 1.70%. Steel with a carbon content higher than 0.60% is usually called high carbon steel, steel with a carbon content between 0.25% and 0.60% is called medium carbon steel, steel with a carbon content less than 0.25% is called low carbon steel, and steel with a carbon content less than 0.04% is called industrial pure iron.
Especially for sulfur in steel, if it exists in the form of iron sulfide, due to its low melting point (around 1000 ℃), it can cause the "hot brittleness" phenomenon of steel, that is, hot deformation, and cracking during high temperature operation, which affects the quality and service life of the product. The lower the sulfur content in steel, the better.
Generally, the sulfur content in ordinary steel is less than 0.050%, the sulfur content in tool steel is less than 0.045%, and the sulfur content in steel should be less than 0.020%.
